The Story Behind Christmas Jumpers

The Story Behind Christmas Jumpers

Christmas jumpers have become really popular particularly in the UK. Charities such as save the children have been a contributing factor to this craze becoming so popular. People are encouraged to make the world better with a sweater and raise funds for Save the Children by wearing a Christmas jumper may businesses take part in this and on one particular day in December schools, businesses, and shops encourage employees and children to make a donation and take part by wearing a Christmas jumper.

A new trend has arose through the popularity of Christmas jumpers where families will get together around Christmas time and wear matching sets this has also become popular with personalisation of family names on jumper sets.

But what is the original story behind Christmas jumpers?

Dr Benjamin wild has noted that Christmas jumpers date back all the way to 1890 Scandinavia where jumpers where  knitted and created to keep fisherman warm. It is also rumoured that the different colours and fairilse patterns were used to help identify those who where lost at sea.

But it was the phase of outdoor activities spreading across Scandinavia such as skiing and hiking that contributed to these jumpers becoming what they are today. The icy and cold conditions of these pursuits created a need for extra warmth and with that was some of the traditional Christmas patterns we know today with an array of geometric prints and colours influenced by forest landscapes, became common skiwear.

As the travellers from Scandinavia returned to Europe in their new colourful knits a new trend began to spread across Europe. A jumper that was once created for warmth over fashion became a symbol of a luxurious lifestyle.

Fast forward to the twenty first century and advancing technology that would make these jumpers easier and cheaper to make along with the popularity of film and tv culture a new trend is being formed across western culture.
